Hot Insulation
The term “hot insulation” refers to the insulation of environments with temperatures between +40°C and +1250°C using various methods. Based on factors such as pre-application feasibility reports, area surface area calculations, fluid temperature measurements, and the location of the process area, the most appropriate process method is determined by selecting materials such as fiberglass wool, ceramic wool, stone wool, aerogel, ultrawool, polyurethane, cellular glass, and calcium silicate.
Hot insulation is a crucial component of industrial insulation. This application prevents heat loss from surfaces, allowing the gas, fluid, or solid within to maintain its temperature. Hot insulation can be applied to various surfaces, such as pipes, air ducts, equipment, and tanks. It can also be applied to the exterior surfaces of buildings, residences, or other structures to prevent heat transfer from the external environment.
Hot insulation applications are ideal for steam lines, combustion boilers, equipment carrying hot fluids, heat exchangers, surfaces, and structures requiring insulation from the external environment. Additionally, hot insulation applications are also performed when the outdoor temperature is lower than the temperature of the surface to be insulated. For example, in areas at risk of freezing, equipment other than water pipes or water storage tanks may need to be insulated.
The main insulation materials used for hot insulation include rock wool, glass wool, ceramic wool, phenol foam, glass foam, elastomeric rubber, and calcium silicate. Additionally, materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, and PVC can be used for insulation coatings.

Cold Insulation
Cold insulation is applied when the ambient temperature is below 8°C, depending on the operating requirements. In such applications, elastomeric rubber can be used in moderate temperatures, such as cooling water lines and cooling air ducts. However, in applications involving cryogenic fluids ranging from -35°C to -180°C, such as liquid ammonia, liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid carbon dioxide, and liquid nitrogen, specialized materials such as polyurethane injection, polyisocyanurate (PIR), glass foam, phenol foam, and cryogenic blankets are preferred.
The primary purpose of cold insulation is to prevent condensation. Therefore, the applied vapor barrier is as crucial as the insulation material itself. While a vapor barrier may not be necessary in cryogenic mattress applications, the use of a vapor barrier is mandatory for prefabricated insulation materials, such as PIR, PUR, PUF, cellular glass (foam glass), and phenol foam.
